Saturn – Living with the old Devil Wherever Saturn is placed in our charts we all have to confront the issues it presents us with. Saturn symbolises restriction, delay and limitations in life in contrast to the flowing expansion of Jupiter. While Saturn can sometimes give us a painful ‘reality check’ it can also help us foster qualities such as patience, self discipline and setting personal boundaries. Our themed evenings provide a perfect opportunity to informally discuss astrological issues. Following an introduction to the topic the evening will be facilitated by a committee member. Bring your own or other people’s charts along to explore what Saturn is up to in their horoscopes! A meeting of the Scottish Astrological Association. Venue: Room 2, Theosophical Society, 28 Great King Street, Edinburgh, EH3 6QH. Time: 7.30pm. Entry cost: By donation.

When the Universe Came to the People: Citizen Science for Skeptics with Alice Sheppard. EAstronomy has been the subject of wonder and speculation for as long as historical records exist. As with all science, people got some things right and, even with the best methods available, other things wrong. Since 2007, Alice Sheppard has run the Galaxy Zoo Forum, the discussion area for an online astronomy project with 300,000 members worldwide. Galaxy Zoo has so far produced 21 papers, whose authors and acknowledged contributors include several ordinary citizens. Some of its findings were a direct result of questions or collections of objects created by the users, who became "Citizen scientists". The Astrology of Jung’s Liber Novus ('The Red Book') with Liz Greene. That C. G. Jung was an accomplished astrologer is an open secret in Jungian circles, although even in this context there is some discomfort on the part of some analysts about his involvement with astrology. The many references to a sophisticated working astrology throughout the Collected Works, as well as the important essay entitled synchronicity, make clear Jung’s ongoing investigations into the links between astrology and psychology. However, the publication of Liber Novus (known as ‘The Red Book’) in the latter part of 2009, although profoundly revealing in terms of the development of Jung’s astrological understanding, has not been properly explored from this perspective, despite the proliferating articles, conferences, seminars, and websites dedicated to Liber Novus since its appearance over two years ago. This seminar will explore the astrology of Liber Novus, not only in the context of Jung’s own horoscope, but also as his imaginative description of a journey through the planetary spheres, reflecting his identification of interior ‘work’ on one’s horoscope with individuation and with the stages of the alchemical opus. From Liber Novus it becomes clear that Jung was the first genuinely psychological astrologer of the modern era, developing a dynamic perception of planetary patterns that continues to exert a major influence on the astrologies of the twenty-first century. Price: £55. Venue: Regent’s College, Inner Circle, Regent’s Park, London, NW1 starting at 10am – 4.30pm. Venus and the Moon: Finding Rest in all the Stress with Darby Costello. With the world threatening to fall apart around us, we need to know where we can find rest and recuperation. In this seminar we shall explore how the Moon reflects our feeling of home and comfort, and how Venus reflects our ability to attract love and beauty into that home. We are all influenced by our collective notions of 'home' and 'beauty' but we must look at our own Moon and Venus to uncover where and how these fundamental necessities might be found. We shall look at the Moon and Venus by sign and aspect and then examine their relationships to the highly charged outer planets which are reflecting the collective disturbances of this time. Burzynski - A Perfect Storm for Skeptics Cancer quackery is a pernicious and dreadful thing selling false hope to the vulnerable and the desperate at an extortionate price. Last year grassroots skeptics in the UK and internationally fought back against one such dubious treatment and exposed much more than they were expecting. One of those grassroots bloggers at the centre of the Burzynski storm offers their blow by blow summary of how skeptics took on this cancer cure, exposed dubious legal and medical practices and battled to get the UK media to acknowledge its unwitting support for treatments lacking solid evidence. Weird Science: An Introduction to Anomalistic Psychology with Prof. Chris French. Ever since records began, in every known society, a substantial proportion of the population has reported unusual experiences many of which we would today label as "paranormal". Opinion polls show that the majority of the general public accepts that paranormal phenomena do occur. Such widespread experience of and belief in the paranormal can only mean one of two things. Either the paranormal is real, in which case this should be accepted by the wider scientific community which currently rejects such claims; or else belief in and experience of ostensibly paranormal phenomena can be fully explained in terms of psychological factors. The History of the World-Soul This seminar will explore the profound and ancient idea of the collective psyche, known in earlier centuries as the anima mundi or world-soul, central to the philosophies of Plato, Johannes Kepler and C.G.Jung. We will discuss the fascinating practice of relating world events to planetary cycles, sometimes referred to as ‘mundane astrology’, and the ways in which this dimension of astrological work – known since ancient times – is related to particular religious and social world-views and has paradoxically both changed and remained strangely consistent across cultures and through the centuries. The seminar will take the form of a dialogue between Liz Greene and Nick Campion, who will explore both the history of the belief in the world-soul and its spiritual implications, and the ways in which different astrologers and philosophers, past and present, have used astronomical cycles to map world events and the fate of nations and generation groups. The discussion will range from the concept of national horoscopes to the psychology of generation groups, from philosophies of unfolding order to the psychology of the collective unconscious, from the rise and fall of kings to the collective as a living organism and the role of the individual as a mouthpiece for both her/his generation and a vessel for the collective currents of the time. Price: £55. Venue: The Duncan Room at the Bath Royal Literary & Scientific Institution, 16-18 Queen Square, Bath BA1 2HNstarting at 10am – 4.30pm. Sceptical and Credulous Interpretations of Hypnosis with Prof. Andrew Colman. Hypnosis is associated with some truly remarkable phenomena. To mention just one, total anaesthesia can be induced in susceptible hypnotic subjects, so that major dental or internal surgery can be performed without any sensation of pain at all, and there’s plenty of experimental evidence, to be reviewed in the talk, that this is a genuine effect. But its interpretation is highly controversial, and the same applies to all phenomena of hypnosis and even the nature of hypnosis itself. This is the longest-running controversy in the entire history of psychology, with its origins in the 18th century when Franz Anton Mesmer was performing miraculous “cures” on members of the dissolute French nobility, and it is still deadlocked. The sceptical view, in its most extreme form, is that there is no such thing as a hypnotic trance or special hypnotic state of consciousness, and that the phenomena of hypnosis are effects of social influence. After more than two centuries of scientific research, some of the more bizarre claims that have been made for hypnosis, including its alleged usefulness in uncovering repressed memories, can be firmly rejected, but the extreme sceptical interpretation is also hard to swallow. Brain imaging is beginning to throw some new light on the nature of hypnosis, but don’t hold your breath for a resolution of the debate in this talk.
